DAY 2: Granada

Your Careli Tours guide will pick you up at your hotel to start from the lively Central Plaza, taking an overview tour of the churches and mansions by horse-drawn carriage, as the settlers did in colonial times. Then on foot, you’ll visit the La Merced Church, the Municipal Market, La Polvora Fortress and the Convento San Franciso whose museum exhibits mysterious stone carvings and idols made by pre-Columbian cultures inhabiting islands in Lake Nicaragua.  In the afternoon, we will pick you up for a half-day adventure in the Mombacho Volcano National Reserve. Looming above Granada, this enormous cloud forest is dense with lush vegetation that has grown untouched during the centuries since the last volcanic activity was recorded. We will follow the network of trails near the top of the volcano, introducing you to this rich natural world of flora and fauna.

Your driver will pick you up after breakfast, for you’re on your way today (a 1.5-hour drive) to San Juan del Sur, a small, once-sleepy, colorful fishing village that spreads along a sandy crescent of Nicaragua’s Pacific coast, now transformed into the country’s main seaside destination. Travelers are drawn to its laid-back charm, a beach lined with little restaurants serving up the fresh catch of the day plus lobster and shrimp, perfect sunsets, and the fact that it sits amid a string of great beaches offering surfing, fishing, sailing or just glorious beaching-it. San Juan’s beach party of a different kind takes place at Playa La Flor, one-mile stretch of wildlife preserve and the scene of the annual (July to December) nighttime arribada (the arrival)—the mass turtle hatchings and their spectacular but treacherous rush to the sea.
