Day 2: Masaya & Mombacho Volcanoes plus Zip Line!

Children of all ages thrill to the concept of a volcano, and today is a two-volcano day.  After breakfast, we take a half-day tour to the Masaya Volcano National Park, following the trails around the Santiago Crater, active since 1916, and indeed you’ll have a chance to look into the smoldering crater itself.  Return to Granada for lunch, and in the afternoon get ready for your second volcano as we drive to the top of the peak at Mombacho volcano National Reserve, then start a moderate, in the company of a local guide who knows well the flora and fauna of this highland ecosystem, as well as the history of the people who occupied this stunning environment centuries ago.  Next, gear up for the amazing adventure and birds-eye view of this forested world when zip-lining along the 17 platforms of a Mombacho Canopy Tour on the eastern side of the volcano.

Day 3: Morning Kayaking & Afternoon Chocolate cooking class

A great family activity day is scheduled for today, giving everyone a chance at the sporting life and learning something new.  After breakfast, enjoy touring by single or double kayaks along the beautiful Asese Peninsula, between the towering Mombacho Volcano on land side and the famous “Isletas” islands of Lake Nicaragua—the largest lake in Central America—on the other. The tour lasts about 2.5 hours, plenty of time to see many of the 246 species of birds that inhabit this watery stretch.  And along the way you’ll stop for lunch at an Isletas restaurant called the Heron Peak.

Your second activity of the day is all about Chocolate! When visiting the Choco Museo Workshop in Granada. Here every one learns about making chocolate from fermented organic cacao beans: from roasting, winnowing and grinding the beans, to mixing and refining chocolate liquor.  Next it’s time to being molding your own handmade Nicaraguan chocolate bar, which of course goes home with you.  The workshop also includes activing seeing real cacao trees and learning about the history of chocolate, as well as advice on making special recipes and sampling Maya, Aztecas and Spanish cacao drinks.

Day 4: Ometepe Island

After breakfast, transfer to the ferry which will take you across Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe, whose signature peaks of the Concepcion (still active) and Maderas Volcanos you will see as you approach the Island.  You will first head for the Chaco Verde Ecological Reserve, where the jungle rolls down to a  long black beach and monkeys howl from the treetops. Here we find a great variety of birds, such as white and black herons, woodpeckers, magpies, night ducks, owls and sparrow hawks, and animals including howler monkeys, armadillos and rabbits.  We will visit Paradise Butterflies, a project designed to assist in reproduction of endangered species in the area, and have time to enjoy the hotel where you are staying, which is right on beautiful Santo Domingo beach.

Day 5: Morning Horseback riding at Ometepe Island

After breakfast, a morning horseback ride to the San Ramon waterfall is sure to please.  The ride is over wooded terrain and the waterfall —-a spectacular 164 ft. (50 m.) —is a truly impressive, especially in the “green” season (June to mid-December) when the flow is at its peak. It is located on the southern slopes the Madera Volcano.  An afternoon at leisure will surely take in beach time along the sandy shores of Lake Nicaragua.

6

Day 6: Morgan’s Rock and Hacienda Eco-lodge

After breakfast, return to the mainland, and continue overland to Morgan’s Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge, featuring a beautiful white sheltered beach and a myriad of outdoor activities. In the Hacienda’s surrounding 4,000 acres of protected undeveloped forest land, families have lots of time to play and discover nature together. The waters of the private beach are protected by a rocky extension of coastline, shielding the cove from high winds, taming waves and providing calm safe waters. From lounge chairs or hammocks under awnings, it’s easy to watch the kids swimming, snorkeling or boogie boarding, Overlooking the beach and overlooked by the dining room is a beautifully landscaped infinity swimming pool.
Other activities include hiking, fishing, surfing, kayaking through the estuary in a tandem kayak, cruising aboard the wooden vessel El Argonaut.
Children of all ages will enjoy discovering how a sustainable working farm operates. A favorite activity if “Breakfast at the Farmhouse,” during which guests collect eggs fresh from the chicken coop, milk from the gentle Holstein cows, and then sit down for a wholesome family-style meal. On the morning menu are tortillas (yes, you will pound the corn to make the dough), fresh organic fruit and juice, and of course your very own milk and specially prepared eggs.
